Today, we solemnly observe March 14, a day of profound sorrow and remembrance. On this day in 2016, a violent extremist group orchestrated a brutal attack, fueled by deliberate misinformation. They falsely claimed that the under-construction mosque in the courtyard of the Honorable Imam of Hezbut Tawheed, Mr. Hossain Mohammad Salim, was a church. Exploiting this fabricated narrative, they unleashed a wave of terror—torching his residence, ransacking and setting fire to the homes of Hezbut Tawheed members, and completely demolishing the mosque under construction.
In this barbaric assault, two devoted members of Hezbut Tawheed, Khokon and Rubel, who were working on the mosque’s construction, were savagely slaughtered. Their tendons were severed, and in a heinous act of cruelty, their bodies were set ablaze to erase all traces of the crime. Alarmingly, law enforcement personnel were present but failed to intervene, allowing the atrocities to unfold unchallenged.
Nine years have passed since this gruesome massacre, yet justice remains elusive. A case was filed nearly two and a half years later, but instead of ensuring accountability, certain political figures and administrative officials manipulated the proceedings to shield the true perpetrators. The same extremist forces that orchestrated this attack continue to spread false propaganda against Hezbut Tawheed and actively conspire to instigate further violence. Over the years, Hezbut Tawheed has repeatedly called for justice through press conferences and public appeals, yet the authorities have failed to take decisive action.
Despite the destruction, the mosque that once lay in ruins has now risen from the ashes as a towering symbol of resilience. Today, the Shahidi Jame Mosque, a four-story structure, stands as one of the most significant landmarks in the district. Following the Jumu’ah prayer, special prayers were held for the martyrs, and heartfelt condolences were extended to their families. Addressing the congregation in his sermon, the Honorable Imam expressed his deep outrage over the continued impunity of the perpetrators. He urged the interim government to take immediate action in bringing the real criminals to justice and to implement concrete measures to prevent such barbaric incidents in the future.
The persecution of Hezbut Tawheed did not end with the tragedy of 2016. In 2022, a similar attack was carried out on the organization’s office in Pabna, where Sujon Mondol, a dedicated member, was brutally murdered. This year, in the same district, another violent assault left ten members severely injured. In Rangpur, extremist groups incited mobs using propaganda broadcasted through mosque loudspeakers, leading to an orchestrated attack under the leadership of a religious-political faction. The assault resulted in the looting, vandalism, and arson of six homes belonging to Hezbut Tawheed members.
As we stand in solemn remembrance on this day, March 14, we honor the sacrifices of our martyrs—brothers who laid down their lives not for personal gain but for the establishment of Allah’s true Deen. Their blood was not shed in vain. We, the living, remain steadfast in our mission, committed to upholding justice and truth. By carrying forward the struggle they embraced, we shall ensure that their sacrifice is honored, their legacy preserved, and their killers brought to justice.
