Hezbut Tawheed organized a human chain and protest rally in Kolkata, urging international human rights organizations to protect its members from extremist attacks in Bangladesh. The event, held on Saturday, October 26, at 2:30 p.m., was arranged by the Hezbut Tawheed India Foundation. It began with a human chain in front of the Kolkata Press Club and concluded with a protest meeting inside the club.
Abul Khayer Mallik moderated the human chain, while Kazi Abdul Haque, President of the Hezbut Tawheed India Foundation, delivered the keynote address. In his speech, he highlighted the instability in Bangladesh following the fall of the Awami government due to a mass uprising. He expressed concern over conspiracies aimed at expelling and persecuting individuals of different faiths or ideologies through mob violence and religious extremism. He criticized the interim government’s inability to take decisive action against these illegal activities and noted that the extremist violence has now extended to Hezbut Tawheed, a non-political movement.
Kazi Abdul Haque detailed an incident from September 7, when an extremist religious group held an illegal rally in front of Sonaimuri Police Station. At the rally, the group issued threats to expel Hezbut Tawheed from Noakhali, warning of attacks, arson, and destruction if their demands were not met. He emphasized that the area is home to over a thousand Hezbut Tawheed members, including children, women, and the elderly, as well as significant assets like the residence of the movement’s Imam, Hossain Mohammad Selim, a mosque, a school, factories, and over fifty development projects. These facilities, he stated, are among the extremists' primary targets.
The protest rally also emphasized the movement’s appeal to international human rights organizations and the United Nations. It called for urgent action to hold accountable those who organized the illegal rally, issued threats, and incited violence. The participants also demanded legal action against extremists who have spread threats on social media and urged authorities to investigate all recent attacks on Hezbut Tawheed members in Noakhali and across Bangladesh to ensure justice.
The event included speeches from prominent figures such as intellectual Anis Uddin and Nazrul researcher and music artist Dr. Deepa Das. The speakers collectively condemned the conspiracies against Hezbut Tawheed and highlighted the need for international intervention.
In concluding the event, the speakers recalled a barbaric attack in 2016, triggered by false rumors, which led to the destruction of an under-construction mosque, arson, looting, and the brutal murder of two Hezbut Tawheed members. They lamented the lack of justice for these atrocities and underscored the urgency of taking preventive measures to avoid a recurrence of such violence.
