Dhaka, March 4, 2025: A human chain and protest procession were held this morning in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to protest against the orchestrated attack on Hezbut Tawheed in Pirgacha, Rangpur. The event, organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan Branch of Hezbut Tawheed, saw the participation of thousands of men and women. The procession was led by Dr. Mahbub Alam Mahfuz, President of Hezbut Tawheed Dhaka Metropolitan Branch, and addressed by SM Shamsul Huda, Information Secretary of Hezbut Tawheed, Arif Uddin, President of Narayanganj Region, Ayesha Siddika, Women’s Organizer, Taslima Islam, and other prominent members.

The speakers condemned the attack on the members of Hezbut Tawheed that took place on February 24th in Chhidaamhaat, a village in Pirgacha Thana, Rangpur. The attack occurred after Abdul Quddus Shamim, the newly appointed President of Hezbut Tawheed’s Rangpur Division, organized a gathering at his residence. Local leaders of a religious political party incited an extremist group to oppose the event. On the day of the attack, over 500 extremists, marching under the banner of ‘Muslim Tawheedi Janata,’ entered Chhidaamhaat village and launched an assault on Abdul Quddus Shamim’s house.

Despite the presence of police and military personnel, the attackers vandalized five homes, looted property, and set buildings on fire. They also torched 23 motorcycles, injuring 20 people, seven of whom are in critical condition. The total property damage has been estimated at 1.76 million BDT.

The speakers further highlighted that following the attack, Hezbut Tawheed members have been subjected to harassment through false charges. Although Abdul Quddus Shamim, the victim, filed a case against the attackers, no arrests have been made thus far.

Additionally, due to ongoing threats from the perpetrators, 40 families from the village have been displaced and are living in dire conditions. The protesters called for immediate compensation and safe rehabilitation for the affected families, along with the arrest of the culprits and the withdrawal of false cases against Hezbut Tawheed members.

Hezbut Tawheed is a non-political religious reform movement that has organized over 200,000 events in the past decade to combat religious exploitation, communalism, extremism, and corruption. Throughout its 30-year history, the organization has maintained a reputation for peaceful conduct, with no records of any acts of disorder or lawbreaking.
